INSEAN is a Research Institute active in the field of naval and marine hydrodynamics. Established in 1927, and known since then as "The Italian Ship Model Basin", it is located in the south-west suburb of Rome. INSEAN is a government institution under the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport.

The training philosophy at MDL is based on the idea that design is a discipline that requires hands-on practical application. At MDL the professional practitioner integrates real project experience, technology experimentation and professional practice into an effective teaching method.
